Firm Favorite: Benefit's Boxed Blush in "Rockateur"

If you tuned into any beauty guru's channel this past Fall, there's a good chance you saw this little boxed blush crop up at least once.  It made its rounds on YouTube and received a lot of initial love from plenty of people, however the buzz seems to have died back quite a bit since.

Well I'm here to make some more noise about it.  This blush completely blew me away with its subtle shimmer, its ability to wake up my face, and the healthy sheen it leaves behind.  As you can see above, a light application leaves more of a highlighty sheen than any huge color payoff.  This is definitely a blush for girls who are scared of blush, as it's almost impossible to overdo it with this one, although a more flushed look can be achieved if you build it up (see last picture).  It's delicate, it's glowy and its not over-the-top which is about all that I can handle in a blush.  In fact, if applied in a strategic way, it almost looks like a natural flush!  Win.  And the smell.  THE SMELL.  It's gooood.  This was one of those products that I was initially just sort of meh about, but I inexplicably just kept using it every day, and now if I don't use it for a day I miss it.  We've all been there, right?

But back to the review, so as I said the product itself is gorgeous, however I have to admit the packaging is a bit tacky.  I never really got the boxed blush thing, to be honest.  The box makes it a bit awkward to use as it can be hard to fit the whole brush inside, however having your blush in a box means that you'll never lose product due to fall-out, and the actual blush is less likely to shatter while traveling because it's well cushioned.  So I guess I can't really fault the box.  Doesn't mean I don't still think it's weird though.

Anyway, that's enough from me.  Have you tried this blush?  I'd love to know your thoughts on it!  Do you have a favorite blush?

If you've ever been curious about Kat von D's Lock-it Tattoo foundation, MAC Prolongwear concealer, and the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Diffused Light, well you're in luck!  Because you get to see them all in action!  Woo!

Tune in for a lot of rambling, awkward cuts, and ever changing angles.  And yes, as per usual, both my battery and my card failed me during filming.  Several times.  Three cheers for under-preparedness!

Makeup Shakeup

You know those times when you open the fridge and there's a ton of food, but absolutely nothing to eat?  Well that's how I was feeling with my makeup collection recently.  With at least ten different foundations in front of me, I made up an excuse for each one.  "This one's too dark, that one's too heavy, those don't give enough coverage," etc...

So after having properly convinced myself that none of my current foundations were suiting my skin at the moment, off I set like Goldilocks, to Boots in search of that je ne sais quoi.

With medium coverage and glowy skin as standard boxes I like my foundations to check, and with a special preference for long lasting power, I was in search of something affordable, yet fresh. Something my current foundation collection was lacking.  And I found it in Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum foundation.

I should have known I'd like this after hearing every. Single. Beauty guru go on about how great it was, but not one to jump at every hyped product, I never even swatched it.  How happy I was to discover just how true the hype really was.  As you may be able to see from the photos, the Healthy Mix Serum foundation amps up the glow factor, has a decidedly medium coverage which lets my freckles shine through, but can be built up to medium-full with a second layer, and it's actually a perfect color match for me FOR ONCE.  I have notoriously bad luck with color matching, but shade 53 Light Beige suits me just fine and came home with me last weekend.  You could almost say it's...just right.

I also felt like a new concealer, and while I wanted to pick up a replacement for my old tube of Maybelline FitMe concealer (which I am currentlyl scraping the bottom of), my Boots was out of my shade, so I settled on the Rimmel Wake Me Up concealer in 030 Classic Beige.  I wasn't the biggest fan of the foundation, so I should have predicted I wouldn't like the concealer very much either.  I'm wearing it in the photos above, but honestly I think it's a waste of time.  It's got the same weird white cast that the Wake Me Up foundation has, it creases under the eyes, and it doesn't give the right amount of coverage or highlighting effect that I like in my under eye area, so I think I will just stick to using this on areas of my face which need covering up.  In my opinion, MAC Pro Longwear and Maybelline's FitMe concealers both look great with this foundation, so I will be sticking with those.

After trying out my new base products, I decided to continue with the shakeup trend and use a blush I haven't used in almost a year, and add a bright lip (which is something I haven't really rocked since moving to London!).  Tired of my neutral blush and lip rut, I dusted MAC Sunbasque blush over my cheeks, and then applied a layer of Revlon's "Love That Pink" lipstick (which was kindly gifted to me by my lovely friend and makeup soulmate, Betti).  And honestly, the bright lip really tied it all together.  This lipstick is seriously awesome and I've been wearing it much more in the last week with just some mascara, my Bourjois foundation and some bronzer.

So to put an end to this long story before it gets even longer, I have fallen back in love with putting my makeup on thanks to a few new additions.  Have you added any new products into your regime recently that have become firm favorites and staples you can't live without?  And please tell me I'm not the only one who has those "empty" fridge moments...
